The First Swiss Mercenaries

As weapons technology and infantry tactics changed, the Swiss Confederacy was one of the most innovative forces in Europe. Warfare had always been a common man’s pursuit in the Swiss lands, as groups of commoners would fight their neighbors or occasionally unite with them if foreigners tried to march over the Alps. As a result, the Swiss were efficient at summoning large numbers of trained men in a short period of time, something other regions had difficulty managing. Records show that by the middle of the 15th century, when the Confederacy consisted of eight cantons, they could use conscription to summon 54,000 men, a vast army by the standards of the time.
